Bill's Friends and Family

Sept 10, 2007

We had a wonderful weekend with the Huber Clan.

Everyone arrived on Friday. We tried to pace ourselves in visiting Bill. Everyone wanted to see him, but all the activity wore him out quickly. "Everyone" is Janine, Don and 5 month old Maggie from Indy, Jon and Laura from Knoxville, and Kari (37 weeks pregnant) and Jeff from Charlotte.

On Saturday, after visiting Bill, Janine, Don, Maggie and Laura headed to the Brookfield Zoo, which is just down the street from the hospital. Church friends (The Throndsons) who volunteer at the zoo, gave us passes to use. They had a wonderful time and loved the monkey exhibit and the elephants.

Another church friend (The Masters) brought over everything we could possibly need for breakfast. It was wonderful not to have to think about that, and the guys got in the kitchen and cooked up a feast. They even cleaned up afterwards.

Bill is now on Day 4 of chemo. He receives 2 drugs by IV, 24 hours a day, for 7 days. He also receives red blood platelets everyday and if needed, he is getting plasma, but not on a daily basis. He is tired, very tired. But his strength is building, and he is getting out of bed and sitting in a chair to eat. Today I will take the computer to the hospital and see if he is interested in working on it.

Bill was healthy before all this started. His chances for a cure are very good. His organs are handling the chemo drugs very well. The bad white cells are being destroyed (as well as the good cells), and don't seem to be multiplying at a faster rate then they are being destroyed. (Amen). We will know the outcome of chemo in 2 weeks when he has another bone marrow aspiration.

Interesting fact: The results of Bill's first bone marrow sample showed it be 50%-60% white cell "blasts." Blasts are the mutated white cells that take over the blood and destroy the good cells. The color of his bone marrow was white. (I believe red or pink would have been much better.)
The attending doctor had never seen this before.

We thank you for all the cards you are sending, and well wishes. Bill has not read the get well cards as of this date. He is very weepy, and I'm sure that comes from his weakness. But the cards are in his room just waiting to be read when he is ready to receive your good wishes and prayers.

I go to the hospital everyday. Not only to be with Bill and care for him in the "little" ways, but watch what is going on, speak to the doctors, and become more educated on the subject of leukemia. After 8 days, I have more knowledge on this subject then I wish to know.

Thank you all for you prayers, well wishes, and offers of help. We are in this for the long haul, and I may need your help later.
Love,
Nancy

Nancy,
The website works! Was so happy to hear from you. The kids haven't changed much and Maggie is adorable. I wanted to see Kari pregnant. I know she was hiding her belly. ha
Tell Bill to hang in there and be tough. We are all fighting some kind of battle just not always the same one. Wish I lived closer so I could take Maggie for a while like you used to do my grandchildren. I haven't forgotten those days. Be sure to keep me posted on Bill's condition.

Love to all,
Mary Jo

Nancy,
How wonderful to keep in touch with a web site! It was great to see you children and to know they all were here to support you and Bill. We're sending our very best happy thoughts to both you and Bill. You are both in our prayers as well as the doctors and nurses treating Bill. We hope for good results on his chemo.
Love, Dee

Nancy & Bill - This is a great way for all of us to stay up to date. We pray daily for Bill and those who care for him. Tell him that we can soon knock the dust off of the golf clubs.

Nancy,

Good job by Jon....this is the best way to keep us all informed on Bill's progress. Just know that Ann and I are praying for your family daily. Bill may be weak now, but strength will grow as the time passes. Tell the kids hi and we love them!

Nancy and Bill,

How fortunate you have kids with tech skills. This is awesome.

I'll bet Nancy will know everything there is to know about your condition and hopefully will share with others while you are being cured.

What were your warning signs, how did you detect this early?

We grow and gain strength through our troubles. May you grow strong in body and spirit.
May you find comfort in being surrounded by the Faithful.

xoxo Jeanne Corbin

Hi there,

Ditto on the comments about the webiste and the picture. This is great stuff. Leave it to Jon (and Nancy) - it sounds like Jon could write a book about technology.

We are so relieved to hear the latest information - getting out of bed and sitting in a chair and now blogging! (Making hair jokes no less...hehehehe) Way to go Bill. Keep up the great progress. You're not kidding about taking it one day at a time.

You all are in our thoughts daily.

All our love, Kay & Barney

Bill and Nancy,

As usual we are a day late, but Karen took care of sending we your blog site. What a great idea.

Your children and grandchild all look wonderful in the picture that you sent. I am sure it was an emotional, but wonderful weekend all together. One can almost feel their determination helping you get well, Bill. I feel it is great that you felt like using the computer already!

You are both in our thoughts and prayers always.

Bill & Nancy,

Nancy and I were shocked to hear about Bill’s battle with leukemia. It has been just over a month since we were enjoying a great time together in Alaska. Bill, you and Nancy are both fighters and I am sure that you can, and will, whip this thing. You have been in Nancy’s and my thoughts since we heard about your illness on Sunday. Nancy, if there is anything we can do for you please let us know. Nancy is the communicator in our family, but she is currently away with some friends at Deep Creek so I took the job of letting you know that we are thinking of you in this trying time. I am sure that she will be in contact when she gets home this weekend. We will be following your blog daily and look forward to hearing positive things about Bill’s Chemo results.

Thinking of you,
Bob and Nancy

Hi, both of you guys,
Thanks to Jon for setting this up. Now I won't have to pester Nancy each day for an update. Bill, Shelby has three wigs of various lengths that she used during her chemo. I think you would love them. One of them would let you look like Sonny Bono!!!! They are in the mail!!! Pictures at eleven.
Love you both,
