September 13- The Healing begins...

With any luck, there won’t be too much to write about in the next 5 days. Bill has now completed the Induction Therapy (chemo). As of 6pm this evening, all IV’s have been completed, and he was a “free” man, free of the pole with the hanging bags. Now we let the chemo drugs do their thing, killing the white (and red) cells and hoping the red and “good” white cells rebuild, and the Leukemia white cells do not multiply.

If you are keeping track. Bill’s white cell count is still holding at 400 (that is a good thing) and red cells and platelet counts were still good.

If you want the gory details of the day, here they are. When I arrived, Bill had had a fever most of the night and it was just breaking in the morning. It was time to give him 5 units of platelets, so Demerol comes first because of his allergic reaction last week. So, he fell asleep and missed lunch. When he awoke, it was time for the second IV of platelets, so they gave him Demerol, and he fell asleep. There went the afternoon. (This is the reason it would be silly to come visit Bill, unless you want to come and talk to yourself or his roommate’s wife who talks all the time.) He did have a slight reaction to one of the platelet packs, and I noticed it was O and not A (his blood type). They say it does not matter on platelets, but something caused the reaction. The nurse gave him a steroid and oxygen After an hour, he was okay again.

He was awake for dinner, and he ate well. He walked the halls. Read your messages on the computer, and worked on the computer for a while. Your messages mean so much to him. Whether they are caring words of encouragement, or something that makes him laugh. And, it is wonderful to hear him laugh. Thank you for the part you are playing in his recovery.

Our next big day is Wednesday, September 19th. That is the second bone marrow aspiration and biopsy. Results should be available by next Friday. Check back next week to read what Bill’s next treatment will be.

Our prayer this evening is for a night (and day) without fever.
Our prayer is for the healing hands of God to touch his body.
Amen

Hi Bill and Nancy,

First, let me send our very best wishes for speedy healing ... and for the patience and grace that the process demands from us. Our prayers are with you all!

Now, Bill, I want to assure you that being totally bald and completely hairless is not a totally bad thing. You save so much on shampoo, shaving cream, razor blades, hair conditioner, .... and grooming is a 10 minute snap. No worries about those stubborn hairs that stick straight out, or that nick that won't stop bleeding, or even that wild hair growing out of your ear. No need for a mirror -- just wash, dry and go. There really is something to be said for the good side. When you are feeling a little better and would like to hear some other ways to use this to advantage and fun, let me know. We will talk.

Whatever, whenever you need help, we are just a phone call away. Please do not hesitate to call. Sending you much love and God's blessings. Tom and Susan Widman

Bill and Nancy,

It is still so hard for us to comprehend what you are going through. We really appreciate the time and effort that Nancy is putting forth to send us the details of the proceedures, etc., because it at least gets us close to understanding. We especially like the its a good thing comments because most of the time we wouldn't know that.

So keep on getting better each day and keep the information coming. Right now We are packing up another house for yet another move and it keeps us focused on what is really important in life. Otherwise I might be complaining just a little.

Love,

Pam and Jeff

Dear Mr. & Mrs. Huber,

Please know that we are all thinking about you and praying for you. I will check this blog daily for updates. I will be in Chicago in just a few weeks for the Chicago Marathon. My next marathon will certainly be for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (http://www.leukemia-lymphoma.org/hm_lls) and I will do it in honor of Mr. Huber and to raise awareness and money for LLS.

Take care,
Suzi Hixon and family...

Hi Bill,
I spoke with Nancy briefly yesterday to let her know that you both are in our daily thoughts and prayers. After getting over the initial shock of the situation, I was reminded of some of the very difficult situations we've both been in at times- both Knoxville and Morgantown. Regardless, if you think about them it was our strong faith, full confidence in our faith, and pure determination that delivered us from those situations. In the end, things things did work out one way or another.

I still have full confidence in your fighting ability and the faith you carry to back it up.

Very best to you, Nancy and your entire family. We're with you completely.

Bill,

Our coal days are long behind us, (and my pink hard hat notwithstanding), I miss romping around the wild of PA with you and Jim.

Bill, I know that you are tough and will fight and win this battle. I pray for you daily. Let's talk soon.

Best
John Harrell

Hi, Bill and Nancy,
So glad you are a free man. Sounds like you need to get away from you roomie. What is his wife like? Tell her you are a sick man and she needs to stuff it!!!!!!!!
Shannon is leaving the 15 of Oct. for the FBI. We will miss him, but will keep the roads hot between Kville and Quantico. No idea how they will use his degrees. Tn plays Fla tomorrow. It won't be televised there, but I don't think it will matter this year. Fulmer has been struggling the past few years. We sat with the muckiety mucks last week in the air-conditioned, free food rooms. Too stiff. We would rather be in the sections with the smelly people like us!! No wonder UT has to charge so much for the tickets. The food was never ending and wonderful. Can't wait for you guys to be back with us tailgating. Praise God the chemo is working. We'll try to get in touch with you guys Sat. thru Nancy's number.
Love to you,
Becky, of Becky and David

Bill and Nancy,

Nancy, bless your heart for taking such good care of Bill. I have been following your updates with great care, and Don and I are keeping you both in our thoughts and prayers. I do know how hard this ordeal is and by reading the updates, all is good. Let us hope for further decrease in WBC and then start fresh from zero.
Stay strong you two, the Lord is by your side.
We are praying....NO FEVER.
Love ya,
Shelley and Don

Hey Bill,

Now that it is officially the weekend, you can take it easy and relax, watch football games, sleep in front of the TV - just like being at home! Just remember to bet on the right teams - Go Steelers!

Love, Gail

Dear Golf Buddy and fellow Questor,
As I write this, our fellow Questors are heading to the golf course, ready to do damage to the grass and to their bodies. Since our bodies are in need of a rest, it is best to watch from the sidelines this year and think back on our wonderful memories. You and Nancy are an inspiration to all and we wish you the best.
Let's work on being out there next year and you can show them how the game is played...I can only pretend to know what I'm doing...
We're praying for you and Nancy...
Love,
Ruth and Bob
