Sept 19- BMA Day

Yeah. The Bone Marrow Aspiration and Bone Core Sample are finished for this round of chemo.

Bill did really well with the BMA. He said it was not painful, just a pressure in the pelvis area. The doctor inserts a needle for the aspiration, where they draw the fluid from the bone marrow. The bone marrow is where our blood supply is produced. It is a mixture of white and red cells, and platelets.
The good news……... It was red in color. If you remember, two weeks ago, his bone marrow was white and thick with blasts of white cells. The chemo has done it’s job. Results from the BMA will not be ready until Monday. The doctor that reads the fluid is on rotation at another hospital
Bill has not had a fever for 5 days. Of course, he is on antibiotics about 3 times a day. I am sure that helps.

Bill’s blood continues to be low on all counts.

Bill’s count
White cells- 500
HOB (red)-9.6
Platelets- 13,000
Neutrophils- 0 (this is the “good” white cells, and we want to see this number go up in the next week.)

Normal counts should be:
White cells- 3,000- 7,000
HOB- 12-18 gm/dl
Platelets- 150,000-400,000

Bill’s red cell count is on the high side (for him) because he received 2 bags of packed red cells on Tuesday.
Bill is still anemic, still receiving platelets everyday, and red cells as needed.

Pastor Bryant brought us Prayer Shawls made by the ladies of the church. Bill wears both of them (mine and his) every evening when the room cools down. One is wrapped around his shoulders, the other across his lap. He said all he needs now is a babushka, and he’d look like his grandmom.

We both enjoy your cards and well wishes. Thank you so much for taking the time to remember both of us.

Our prayer this evening is for good results from the tests, and improvements in his blood supply. This puts us one step closer to recovery.
Please pray for the 5 other AML patients that have been admitted to Loyola just this month. They are hoping to go home soon also.

Hey guys!
Thank God Bill is a healthy human-looks like that is something definitely in his favor. I would pay to see him in a babushka - but then again, both Grandmas lived to a ripe old age - so I will be sending the babushka!

Love and Prayers,
Gail

Nancy, I love the outfit though I doubt it will catch on for the Newcomers Fashion Show in the spring.
Do you feel better after your day of rest yesterday?
Wonderful to hear that Bill's bone marrow is no longer white.......red is so much more becoming!
Bill, remember, one day at a time, one step at a time.........you ARE the little engine that can....
Love the slideshow.....jon is so talented.

Mom & Dad -
Funny story for your Thursday...
I was doing a little Google research on leukemia and came across an interesting site. A business actually sells t-shirts that say F*@# Leukemia! Now I know that's a word we would surely get our mouths washed out with soap for using, but I just laughed when I saw it. They have mugs and sweatshirts, too. I think I know what someone's getting from Santa...
Laughter is a wonderful thing! Hope you have something to laugh about today!
Love, Janine

Hi Bill and Nancy,
So glad to hear that the aspiration went well! You are one tough guy, Bill! I don't think I would have handled that procedure as calmly as you seem to have.

I'm hoping that your numbers go up/down as they should. Both of you, keep up the good work!

Take care,
Janet and John

Bill and Nancy,
Now, Bill, you know what we women go thru when we have our annual GYN visit!!! Talk about pressure!!!
So glad you are on the road to recovery. I am learning to do lap robes for our church. I will have one for you in 2010!!! Couldn't resist the picture of you and David with your big fish catch!
We'll go to back to the beach when you are up and about.
Love you both,
Becky

Hi Guys.
Bill - what do you get to do there for fun? Nancy in that outfit is entertaining.
Nancy - You need to get her to keep the suit for when you get home as it is see through. Use your imagination for now. I hope your kids don't read this part of the message.
Janine - shame on you. We did not teach you those words in church youth group. It does adequately express how one should feel though.
Jon - why do these people keep saying that your are so smart. They do not know you like I do.
Keri - Put a profile picture of you in there now. I understood that this made your Dad laugh.
All - Lets go to the beach and sing I got friends in low places. Shannon can drive the mini but bring two sets of keys.

Bill and Nancy,
Loved the photos. All good. Especially liked the one of Bill with the purse. We won't even ask the occasion.
Once again Jon has found a way to entertain us.
Some of the older folks at FCC said that they remembered the two daughters.
Did we think that anyone would ever forget Jon??
No way that anyone here will forget to think of the two of you.
We're so grateful for the updates, and for all good news.
Thanks for all the time you spend remembering all of us "out there" who want to be updated.

I was a little disturbed by the Colts game picture on the slide show...until I read the caption!
I am so glad to hear everything went well yesterday (I knew it would), amazing things happen on the 19th of September. Thanks for the birthday card, I was glad to get it.
Keep trucking Uncle Bill, I need to see you in that Babushka everyone's talking about.

Hi Bill and Nancy,

These updates are so encouraging and helpful for all of us 'out here" who are thinking and praying for you both. The pictures made me smile, laugh, and cry..Nancy, the decorator, in all white..but I bet she was wearing some great jewelry. May God provide a big hug for both of you this day!!

Hey Hubers!
You certainly know how to turn your world upside down. I just opened your letter Bill, and I certainly would like to talk to you personally by phone asap. Nancy does do a wonderful impersonation of the Michelin Tire Guy or Pillsbury Doughboy. Our prayers are starting now. We love you guys!

A babushka-cute. Someone told me today that hair can come back in after surgery. There is still hope for you. I'm glad your test results are improving.

Nancy Darth Vader would be jealous of your fashionable outfit.
Keep saying prayers
